I have a steep uphill just down the block from my house that I have to take everyday, so I ask you oppo, drive a cold engine at 3500 rpms in first and possibly cause unnecessary wear, or lug it in second gear up the hill? It’s pretty steep.

Is it a modern car/engine? How long does the engine run before you hit the hill? I would want it to have been running for about a minute before you put a big load on it. If it will go up in 2nd without shaking, use 2nd. If it bogs and shudders and doesn’t have enough power to get up the hill in 2nd then use first. For most engines 3500 RPMs is not a big deal.

Heh. That’s almost my truck’s redline. And it’s not even a diesel!

The answer is clearly nitrous...

Or boost...

Wait, what was the question again?

LS swap with nitrous and boost

2017, very modern, runs 1-5 minutes before I get to the hill, it can go up in second without shaking, but I ask myself this question everyday as revving an engine up a bit while cold feels wrong and lugging feels wronger. Was curious on oppos opinion.

3500rpm isn’t excessive IMO. I’m assuming redline on your engine is 6500-7000rpm. What’s the gear ratio for 1st vs 2nd?

Redline is at 6200ish and the gear ratio, don’t know for sure but first is a fairly short gear and second is normal but a bit long. If I take first to redline and shift it goes to 2200-3000 and I’m only doing 25ish. Also that shift is painful because I have to wait because the engine takes forever to wind down, something about a cleaner burn and less emissions in the air.

Gear ratios and final drive ratios should be printed in your owners manual. I was just curious if they had a big gap between 1st and 2nd.

If it’s really cold out like <15 deg F then I would use 2 gear at about 2,000 rpm until there is temperature registered on the temp gauge. Otherwise I wouldn’t worry about it.

It’s not lugging unless it’s bucking and shaking. If it’s pulling smooth in 2nd gear and has enough power you aren’t lugging the engine.

I guess I think of lugging differently, I think of it as pressing the gas a lot and getting little results, like flooring it in 6th and barely anything happenng. I consider that lugging. Now the shaking you mention I call the “stall wobble” or something similar.

That’s not lugging, you are just out of the powerband, no big deal. If it’s misfiring and you are at 450 RPM and it’s bucking all over the place, that’s lugging. Like if you went to shift from 1st to 3rd and missed 3rd and hit 5th instead, you would probably be lugging. At least, that’s what I know of as lugging. Otherwise it’s working as designed.
